Janne Räisänen

Janne Räisänen is a painter who constantly shifts between canvas and paper. This movement is reflected in the ways in which the work is displayed, either in classical settings or in messier, cooler installations. His drawings and paintings show and comment on the daily lives of human beings in warm-hearted, humorous and, not to forget, weird ways. In his most recent works, the glint in Räisänen's eye is also directed at himself. As a visual artist Räisänen is the very ur-image of the singer-songwriter, producing little big stories that, in a pleasant and beneficial way, leave us confused, but never cold.

Janne Räisänen (b. 1971, Pudasjärvi) lives and works in Berlin. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 1998, was awarded the Finnish Art Society’s Ducat Prize in 1998 and was named Young Artist of the Year 1999, together with Janne Kaitala and Jukka Korkeila. In 1999 and 2001, he was nominated for the Carnegie Art Award and, in 2004, for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. In 2008 Räisänen was awarded the William Thuring Foundation's main prize. Räisänen’s works are in most Finnish public collections - e.g. HAM - Helsinki Art Museum, Kiasma, Sara Hildén Art Museum and Wihuri Collection - and in several collections abroad. His works were shown at Schwarz Contemporary, Berlin, in 2015 and 2017; Salon Dahlmann, Berlin, in 2015; and at Galerie Anhava in 2012 and 2010.
