Liisa Lounila
Liisa Lounila
In addition to her internationally acclaimed video pieces, Liisa Lounila is also known as a versatile, multidisciplinary artist. Her art production varies from traditional oil painting, painting with glitter, drawing and neon sculptures to working with video. Lounila has also created palladized and silver-plated objects that have been taken from everyday life and special occasions. She thus transforms mundane objects and consumer goods into kinds of relics. A gloomy, industrial-design-inspired aesthetic is typical of Lounila's works. She is fascinated by “larger than life” emotions or experiences, rebelliousness, emptiness, subliminal experiences, and the anxiety that results from not being able to achieve them.
Liisa Lounila (b. 1976, Helsinki) is a Helsinki-based artist who has spent several periods living and working in New York. She made her debut at the Venice Biennale in 2003. Already then, the young artist representing Finland made an impression with her distinctive nostalgic aesthetic. Lounila has participated in group exhibitions all over the world, and her videos have been screened at numerous film festivals since the beginning of the 90’s. She was nominated for the Carnegie Art Award in 2013.
