Eeva-Riitta Eerola
Becoming
-

Helsinki Contemporary has the pleasure to present painter Eeva-Riitta Eerola’s first solo exhibition at the gallery; Becoming is painting at it’s most impressive.

Previously Eerola’s paintings were shown at the gallery in the group exhibition Passion Play in spring 2013. The pieces seen then presented a more abstractive phase in the artist’s body of work. Eerola’s expression has since moved to a more narrative and figurative direction. The basic question of perception, and to perceive, have been central in the working process. What and how do we look and recognize, excist and participate?

Human figure and landscape can be recognized in the paintings. The perceived image is however shattered like a collage. One can see the depicted landscape transform into a detail and the detail again into to landscape. Eerola also reflects the different means of representation by feeling the surface of the painting and by slowly working on the texture of the material – as the different times interlace into the works.

”These paintings are particularly emphasizing the act of seeing and to be seen. We are a part of the same world we perceive.”
- Eeva-Riitta Eerola

The exhibition has been supported by Finnish Cultural Foundation, Uusimaa Regional fund; Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Arts Council of Uusimaa.

Eeva-Riitta Eerola (b. 1980 in Siilinjärvi) graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2010 and also studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris in France.
